NCEPOD Surgical Outcome Risk Tool (SORT)
The SORT is a surgical preoperative risk prediction tool, developed by the NCEPOD. The work describing the development and validation of it was published in the British Journal of Surgery in November 2014. It provides a percentage mortality risk for death within 30 days of surgery for adults undergoing inpatient surgery (exclusions – obstetrics, neurosurgery, cardiac and transplant surgery). It has an advantage over many existing prediction tools by consisting of solely preoperative variables and allowing rapid and easy data entry. In the analyses, it was also found to have greater accuracy than two other preoperative tools.
Cranworth Medical developed a mobile app implementing the SORT on behalf of NCEPOD. The apps are available on both Android and iOS platforms and give clinicians direct access to a wealth of data to support surgical preoperative risk assessment.
